UPDATE: An Open Letter to the Smith Community from Carol Christ

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Like many of you, I was shocked and dismayed by the recent letter to the Sophian by an alumna from the Class of 1984, and I have been buoyed and impressed by the logic, eloquence, and passion of the responses of the Smith community. It is my cardinal belief that diversity strengthens education for all, and that the very core of Smith’s mission—its founding principle—is providing educational opportunity for those who have less access to it. That was Sophia Smith’s dream—that by founding a college for women, she could redress their wrongs, adjust their wages, and increase their influence in society.

The letter writer is ignorant about a number of issues. Admission to Smith is far more competitive now than it was in the 1980s, when the letter writer attended Smith. We now have the highest number of applicants and the lowest admit rate in our history. The most competitively admitted students at Smith are international students on financial aid; only 10% of applicants are admitted. The strongest and most consistent correlation with SAT scores is family income. Most students do submit scores and we, of course, submit them to all of the data-collecting organizations in which we participate, including U.S. News & World Report.

I am proud of the increase in the diversity of Smith over the past decade; we are all the richer for it.

Carol T. Christ

We’re proud too, Carol.

Next Time You Have a Thought- Just Let it Go…

As a senior, I looked forward to Rally Day- enjoyed donning my senior hat, my graduation gown, and taking pictures with my friends. This idyllic day was sadly interrupted when I read a Letter to the Editor today in The Sophian. By now, if you are reading this, I am sure that you know what I am talking about. The letter wherein a Smith Alum, a Ms. Anne Spurzem ’84, proceeded to trash Smith College. I am disheartened that a member of the Smith community would take the time to put together a letter insulting the diversity and intellectual efficacy of our school without any other reason than there are not enough rich white girls on campus anymore.

Never before in my Smith career have I been so disgusted by a fellow Smithie’s comments that it has moved me to write a serious article on this blog to defend Smith College.  I am impressed, and not in a good way, that this woman has the unique ability to insult every single group of people on this campus.

Ms. Spurzem claims that “The people who are attending Smith these days are A) lesbians or B) international students who get financial aid or C) low-income women of color who are the first generation in their family to go to college and will go to any school that gives them enough money. Carol emphasizes that this is one of her goals, and so that’s why the school needs more money for scholarships or D) white heterosexual girls who can’t get into Ivy League schools.”

On Being a Bunch Of Poor Minority Lesbian Ivy League Rejects.

Editor’s note: This is a response to a Letter to the Editor featured in this week’s issue of the Sophian. You can find the original letter here.

from anonymous:

Ms. Spurzem’s letter to the editor in this week’s Sophian shocked me. Not only does it reflect poorly on her as an individual, but also it speaks horribly for the Smithies of Westchester/Fairfield and pretty much all white Smith students (current and former) for that matter. It really is strange to see someone who is the president of a Smith College Club talking so poorly of her alma mater. I grew up in Southern Westchester and went to a private school there and I could not feel more ashamed of a Smithie from my area. Her condescending, elitist attitude is truly disturbing.

SMITH’S 2012 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER IS…JANE LYNCH

Yes, Jane Lynch from GLEE

FUCK THE FUCK YEAH

Happy Rally Day!!!

So it is Rally Day…For most of you that means a day off from classes (which is nice since we clearly are not going to get any snow days this year). For SENIORS (what what) it means taking out that god forsaken graduation gown and senior hat (yay) and go find out is going to be commencement speaker this year!

If you are one of those Smithies who refuses to take a day off or a senior being prematurely forced into a graduation gown, here is a list of the lectures, etc. that will be happening around campus!

Or…if you are a ballin’ alumn who is getting a medal today, holla at them here!

There is also BRUNCH!

This Week in the Senate

Today during my daily scan of Tumblr I found out that the Smith SGA has a Tumblog!  Hooray for transparency, and bravo to them for posting a round-up of this week’s senate topics.  Here is the text from Smith SGA’s Tumblr:

Issues on campus

Here is a list of issues that were raised in Senate this week:

  • Housing
  • Trash cans on campus (should we have more?)
  • Website could be more accesible
  • Recycling needed in Chapin and Hubbard
  • Pool hours (or gym hours in general)
  • Lack of inter-house bonding
  • House points could be more fair (could accomodate for house sizes)
  • Parking by the stables needs to be safer
  • Financial Aid is less available for International Students, leading some students to drop-out
  • Events app for the College with all events listed
  • 44 Green Street needs better facilities (washing machines, wifi)
  • Conversations about religious diversity need to be had
  • Tendency to alienate those with Conservative views
  • Disability awareness
  • OneCards should be easier to use with local businesses
  • Academic competitiveness leds to excessive stress
  • Trans* issues need to be talked about
  • Socioeconomic issues need to be talked about

Talk to your house Senators, or better yet, come to Senate and contribute to the constructive dialogue about what can be done to address these topics.

Senate meets every Tuesday at 7 in CC 103/104. Please come by and share your thoughts. Senate is an open forum and exists to address students’ concerns on campus.

Lots of love,

Your SGA Vice President

minkandvelvet’s favorite blog finds this week

I can’t help but share my internet-addiction fueled treasure hunt with you all again this week!

Maddie The Coonhound:

This is a dog named Maddie. This is a blog entirely filled with photos of her standing on things. She looks pretty calm and bored about the whole thing if you ask me. I would try to get my dog to do that, but his legs are too short and he doesn’t ever put up with my nonsense. Not even if i have his chewy bone.

Goths Up Trees:

Everything about this is wrong, but baby I don’t want to be right. I have so many unanswered questions about this. It’s also kind of similar to Maddie standing on things…but instead it’s goths…sitting in trees.

And let me just leave you with one more little present…
