Tidbits of the Week

TIDBIT A: Spring Weekend is upon us, and also upon us (as of tomorrow) is another foot of snow! Just when we thought we could start wearing flip flops and t-shirts, Mother nature decided to play a mean-spirited April Fools Joke. Stay positive, though! This means we should simply RISE UP, party hard, and show New England what Smithies are really made of. Drink your mocktails, grind like a pro at a house party, and try to keep your head up because spring really IS just around the corner. We don’t want this to end up like that movie Cabin Fever….
TIDBIT B: More amazing news from Tune-Yards, featuring Smith Alumnae Merril Garbus ’01. Recently, Rolling Stone reviewed the new single “Bizness” and rated it with 4 out of 5 stars. BALLER. She was also in The Noteables.

Posted: March 24, 2011 Filed under: Features 2 Comments »
So this is how it feels when a century-old college tradition forces you to buy one of the most unflattering garments available to women across the globe. All us Senior ladies (and gents) want to do is show up for the Ivy Day parade looking like smokeshows in our white dresses, and yet, our inevitable Senior Week hangover and our New England winter pastiness makes us look more anemic than hawt. Spring Break revealed that it’s harder than I ever imagined to find a white dress that actually looks decent, when most made me look like one of those dead girls from The Shining or a member of the Young Republican’s caucus. As a lightweight internet shopping addict, it has become my personal mission to seek out la creme de la creme of white dresses.

Bring your friend’s girlfriend’s mom.

TIDBIT A: Memes! Memes! Memes! Our new favorite meme developed from the LOLSMITHIES Tumblr, which uses that infamous drawing of a contemptuous looking, cigarette smoking Velma as a template for the ‘Jaded Smithie.’ LOLSmithie memes have cropped up all over Tumblr and Facebook, and the official page encourages fans to submit their own. Smith, we’re counting on your to make this a thing. Our school is just too easy to make fun of.
TIDBIT B: Recently Smith’d discovered that indie band on the rise, tUnE-yArDs is actually Smith alumnae Merill Garbus ’01 of Tenney House. I’ve heard the named tUnE-yArDs being tossed around outside of Smith context multiple times, and guys, they’re kind of a big deal. tUnE-yArDs is known more specifically across the indie landscape for Garbus’ beautiful, unique vocal textures, incredible live performance, and the “lo-fi/African style eccentricity” on her debut album, BiRd-BrAiNs (Prettymuchamazing.com). We’ll be posting a lengthier article on tUnE-yArDs in due time, but for now, check out her sick website (http://tune-yards.com/), and listen to some jams from her upcoming release, w h o k i l l on Soundcloud.

No worries. Just another week or so before everything becomes beautiful once again. More importantly, though, WELCOME BACK. This is the home stretch and just like all of our lovely 2011s want to make it count in these finals weeks of college, so does Smith’d. After a week long hiatus full of revelry and sunshine, were back, just 4 u. We’ve got loads of updates in the coming day, so check back frequently.
Love,

Hannah and Maggie’s New Album “Fine Being Here” Available Now
Posted: March 8, 2011 Filed under: Culture, Features 3 Comments »
After months of anticipation, Hannah and Maggie (Hannah Hickok ’12 and Maggie Krauss ’12) have self-released their folk rock debut, “Fine Being Here,” which is now available on itunes and Amazon. The album contains 11 tracks that call upon the melancholic lyrics and shimmering vocal harmonies of The Weepies, with jubilant moments that soar above the more general arc of syrupy folk music. Hannah and Maggie’s impressive musicality is only bolstered by the feeling that what they have to say is both honest and organic.
Click below the cut for all of their sweet linkz, the album’s tracklisting, an AMAZING cover of “Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, along with more information from their official Press Release.
