I am writing to inform you and your university about an exciting summer opportunity with the Kibera School for Girls, a project of the dynamic non-profit Shining Hope for Communities. The Summer Institute is a highly competitive program that provides deeply motivated college students with on-the-ground experience teaching at The Kibera School for Girls, the first free school for girls in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya, Africa’s largest slum.
Shining Hope for Communities is a 501©(3) founded by Wesleyan students Kennedy Odede ’12 and Jessica Posner ’09 that empowers and provides services for over 11,000 Kibera residents every year. We have been featured by Nicholas Kristof in the New York Times, CNN, NBC, and the Huffington Post.
The details and application can be found here: http://shininghopeforcommunities.org/support/work-with-us/summer-institute/. Applications are due March 1st.
editor’s note: SHOFCO also put out this incredible video this past December, featuring the girls of the Kibera School for Girls and Kennedy Odede himself:
