Thoughts on Winter and Vests
Posted: January 31, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »Seriously ladies, what’s up with the weather? Tomorrow’s forecast is 51 and rainy. FIFTY ONE. IN FEBRUARY. Remember snowpocalypsehalloweeneleven? Remember last freaking winter and all of the snowy madness it brought? Come on, mother nature…you are really bringing the weakest sauce to the table. We all know you’re capable of some serious snowage…
So the time has come, dear Smithies, that I will discard my “Winter Fashion Picks!!!!11!1!!!” post that was full of snow boots and warm fuzzies in favor of something more practical for this rainy, strange season. So I will introduce to you my #1 way to deal with this freaky weather. And the answer is….a good vest! Not just for skiers or catholic school uniforms anymore. This essential layering piece can go over a sweater, but isn’t as bulky as a jacket. I know I’ll be wearing my vest tomorrow in the rain. And it will be awesome.
This Jessica Simpson number layers really well over a sweater or dress. Don’t wear it like the model, though. It looks like it’s got some nice crop action going on there, so play that up with a high waisted skirt or pants if you want to go the non-dress route. I’m seeing a turtleneck dress with knit tights and some nice tall boots. You will be warm, but have some nice layers going on that you can adjust throughout the day.

The fun thing about vests (did I really just write that?) is they can really lend themselves to a classic, tailored look. For a more preppy vibe, check out this Liz Claiborne puffadoo. Do you love the toggles? I love the toggles. Throw that on with some jeans, a long sleeved shirt, and a scarf and you officially look like you spend more than 5 minutes getting ready this morning. And we all like to look like we don’t wake up right before class, right?

For the Smithie looking for a more unisex vest, this Urban Outfitters one does the trick. The metal buttons make it look like you just stepped out of an Orvis catalog, and the pockets up front are perfect for holding your iPhone and OneCard. I’m really digging the way it looks over a button down, so that is a pretty solid styling recommendation. Pair it with cuffed jeans and a black beanie and you just may be the most dapper Smithie around!
