You can take the girl out of the 90′s but you can’t take the 90′s out of a girl.
Posted: January 30, 2012 Filed under: Culture 1 Comment »Hindsight has a frustrating way of making us realize, far too late, how embarrassing we once were. Platform flip-flops, white short shorts, and a passion for Mary Kate and Ashley detective movies are some of the least flattering of my 90’s memories. Luckily, the decade of my birth gives me more to love than to hate. In fact, the time has come for me to fully embrace the fact that I Love The 90′s. Read the rest of this entry »
LIST OF THINGS VOLUME I: Things NOT to do at Smith Parties
Posted: January 29, 2012 Filed under: Culture 1 Comment »-Talk close to someone’s face. Even if it’s because you can’t hear the girl over Ke$ha and genuinely want to hear her thoughts on Judith Butler, it can be perceived as creepy. And if you’re a little too (literally) tipsy, you might fall into her face and have to make out for a minute or seven, whether or not that was on the docket.
-Drunkenly feed someone a hamburger. They might miss the patty and chomp your finger. It could lead to this conversation: “Is that ketchup?” “Nope, that’s blood.”
-Play Jenga in the same building. With all the people running/dancing/gyrating around, I can guarantee that your skills, no matter how supreme, will not impress. Gravity always wins. Read the rest of this entry »

Many of us may have noticed those darling posters around campus for an event to discuss our feelings about going home for the holidays. Really Center for Work, Life, Balance, Feelings, Emotions, I Don’t Know How To Be A Real Person, etc? Seriously? Let’s chat about legit family fun on Thanksgiving and how to survive it.
SmithDailyJolt: A Resurrection
Posted: November 20, 2011 Filed under: Culture 2 Comments »I never thought this day would come, but when I caught wind of an interesting Twitter user following the Smith’d handle, it was true: the ghost has risen.
That sounds melodramatic, but I don’t think there’s any other way to reintroduce The Daily Jolt into the Smith community. A lot of you either never heard of or never got to experience the presence of the Jolt at Smith College, so I’ll compare it to something you DO know: The ACB.
The ACB was an anonymous (sometimes not-so-anonymous) Gossip Girl-esque website that provided an open forum for college students to talk shit about one another. The implied purpose of such a platform was an “I love to hate, but hate to love” aesthetic, where even students who found the site insidious managed to read and absorb the latest Smith College ACB content.

TIDBIT A: Spring Weekend is upon us, and also upon us (as of tomorrow) is another foot of snow! Just when we thought we could start wearing flip flops and t-shirts, Mother nature decided to play a mean-spirited April Fools Joke. Stay positive, though! This means we should simply RISE UP, party hard, and show New England what Smithies are really made of. Drink your mocktails, grind like a pro at a house party, and try to keep your head up because spring really IS just around the corner. We don’t want this to end up like that movie Cabin Fever….
TIDBIT B: More amazing news from Tune-Yards, featuring Smith Alumnae Merril Garbus ’01. Recently, Rolling Stone reviewed the new single “Bizness” and rated it with 4 out of 5 stars. BALLER. She was also in The Noteables.

Weekly Diva’s event SYNTH (See you next Thursday) presents mash-up monsters The Hood Internet. DJs ABX and STV SLV produce what would happen if Crystal Castles and Rihanna made love and gave birth to the most beautiful child you’ve ever laid eyes on, or if Arcade Fire and Blondie chilled out and took bong rips together more often. The Hood Internet is set to bring the fire with all ingredients sweet and savory for a boss dance party this Friday. Bring your friends. Bring your friend’s friends. Bring your friend’s girlfriend’s mom.
WHEN: Friday March 25th @ 9pm
WHERE: Diva’s ($15 for 18+, $13 for 21+)
Here’s a mash-up of Waka Flocka Flame and Crystal Castles to enjoy before the show. Listen to more tunes at their Soundcloud.

TIDBIT A: Memes! Memes! Memes! Our new favorite meme developed from the LOLSMITHIES Tumblr, which uses that infamous drawing of a contemptuous looking, cigarette smoking Velma as a template for the ‘Jaded Smithie.’ LOLSmithie memes have cropped up all over Tumblr and Facebook, and the official page encourages fans to submit their own. Smith, we’re counting on your to make this a thing. Our school is just too easy to make fun of.
TIDBIT B: Recently Smith’d discovered that indie band on the rise, tUnE-yArDs is actually Smith alumnae Merill Garbus ’01 of Tenney House. I’ve heard the named tUnE-yArDs being tossed around outside of Smith context multiple times, and guys, they’re kind of a big deal. tUnE-yArDs is known more specifically across the indie landscape for Garbus’ beautiful, unique vocal textures, incredible live performance, and the “lo-fi/African style eccentricity” on her debut album, BiRd-BrAiNs (Prettymuchamazing.com). We’ll be posting a lengthier article on tUnE-yArDs in due time, but for now, check out her sick website (http://tune-yards.com/), and listen to some jams from her upcoming release, w h o k i l l on Soundcloud.

No worries. Just another week or so before everything becomes beautiful once again. More importantly, though, WELCOME BACK. This is the home stretch and just like all of our lovely 2011s want to make it count in these finals weeks of college, so does Smith’d. After a week long hiatus full of revelry and sunshine, were back, just 4 u. We’ve got loads of updates in the coming day, so check back frequently.
Love,
Smith’d
Hannah and Maggie’s New Album “Fine Being Here” Available Now
Posted: March 8, 2011 Filed under: Culture, Features 3 Comments »
After months of anticipation, Hannah and Maggie (Hannah Hickok ’12 and Maggie Krauss ’12) have self-released their folk rock debut, “Fine Being Here,” which is now available on itunes and Amazon. The album contains 11 tracks that call upon the melancholic lyrics and shimmering vocal harmonies of The Weepies, with jubilant moments that soar above the more general arc of syrupy folk music. Hannah and Maggie’s impressive musicality is only bolstered by the feeling that what they have to say is both honest and organic.
Click below the cut for all of their sweet linkz, the album’s tracklisting, an AMAZING cover of “Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, along with more information from their official Press Release.
